رفتارهای خود آسیب رسان 

رفتارهای خودآسیبی پدیده تازه ای نبوده و از سال 1880 مورد توجه محققان قرار گرفته است.  منینگر (نقل از مدج و همکاران، 2008) نخستین کسی بود که رفتارهای خودآسیبی را از رفتارهای منتهی به خودکشی متمایز کرد. اگرچه خودکشی حدنهایی رفتار خود آسیب رسان است، اما اصطلاح رفتارهای خودآسیب رسان برای رفتارهای غیرکشنده به کار گرفته می شود
